Pakistan achieved a monumental feat by handing South Africa their first-ever ODI series whitewash at home, sealing a 36-run victory in a rain-affected match at the Wanderers. Star player Saim Ayub delivered a sensational performance, scoring his second century of the series, and debutant wrist-spinner Sufiyan Muqeem shone with a four-wicket haul, further exposing South Africa’s struggles against spin.

Ayub Anchors Pakistan’s Innings

Saim Ayub continued his stellar form in South Africa, anchoring Pakistan’s innings with a 101-run knock. He shared crucial partnerships, including a 114-run stand with Babar Azam and a 93-run partnership with Mohammad Rizwan. Both Babar and Rizwan contributed half-centuries, setting up a strong platform for Pakistan. Late contributions from Salman Agha and Tayyab Tahir, who added 74 runs off 47 balls, propelled Pakistan’s total to 308 in the rain-shortened 47-over match.

South Africa Struggles with the Ball

South Africa’s bowlers had a mixed outing. Kagiso Rabada impressed early but lacked support from others. Bjorn Fortuin was economical with 2 for 56 in his 10 overs, but seamers Marco Jansen and debutant Kwena Maphaka leaked runs. Maphaka’s 18-year-old inexperience was evident as he conceded 17 runs in his first two overs. Rabada returned late to dismiss Salman and Shaheen Afridi in successive deliveries, finishing with figures of 3 for 56.

South Africa Falters in the Chase

Chasing a revised target of 308, South Africa’s top order failed to capitalize on a strong start. Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen fell cheaply, while Aiden Markram’s reckless shot off Muqeem’s first ball left South Africa in trouble. Heinrich Klaasen’s brilliant 50 off 29 balls provided some resistance, but his dismissal to Shaheen Afridi ended South Africa’s hopes. Debutant Corbin Bosch impressed with a 40-run knock but ran out of partners, as South Africa were bowled out for 271.

Historic Performance by Pakistan

The victory marked Pakistan’s fifth consecutive bilateral series win, following triumphs against New Zealand, Afghanistan, Australia, and Zimbabwe. Saim Ayub emerged as the standout performer, with two centuries in the series and vital contributions in every match. His all-around effort, including a key wicket in the final game, underlined his dominance.

South Africa’s Woes

The loss highlighted South Africa’s ongoing struggles under white-ball coach Rob Walter. The team has won just two out of six ODI series since February 2023. Poor top-order performances and ineffective bowling remain major concerns ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Looking Ahead

While Pakistan celebrates a historic series win, South Africa faces pressing questions about their squad depth and strategy. For Pakistan, the series win is a significant morale booster as they continue to assert themselves as a formidable force in international cricket.
