Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s finest Test cricketers, has stated he has “zero regrets” about his sudden retirement from international cricket following the Gabba Test. Ashwin, known for his strategic brilliance and match-winning performances, now looks forward to continuing his cricketing journey with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL and the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).

A Sudden Farewell to International Cricket

Ashwin’s decision to retire came as a surprise to many. He announced his retirement in Brisbane, shortly after India’s triumph at the Gabba. Reflecting on his decision, Ashwin said:

“It was very instinctive and has been running in my head for a while. On day four, I just felt it was time and called it a day. For me, it’s a great sense of relief and satisfaction.”

Despite the emotional weight of the moment, Ashwin emphasized that his retirement was not impulsive but a thoughtful decision after introspection.

“Generally, when I go to sleep, I remember moments like taking wickets or making runs. But those memories haven’t been there in the last two years. That was a clear indication to take a different route.”

A Warm Welcome Back Home

Ashwin returned to Chennai the morning after his announcement and was greeted with overwhelming love and support. Family, friends, and fans gathered near his residence, showering him with flower garlands, cheering his arrival, and playing celebratory music.

“I never thought so many people would come here. I just wanted a quiet entry and to relax at home. But you have made my day,” Ashwin told the crowd.

The reception reminded him of the celebrations following India’s 2011 World Cup victory.

“It’s emotional for a lot of people, and maybe it will sink in over time, but for me, it’s a mix of relief and gratitude.”

The Next Chapter: Focus on CSK and Domestic Cricket

Although Ashwin has retired from international cricket, his passion for the game remains undiminished. Returning to CSK, his home team in the IPL, after a decade, has reignited his enthusiasm.

“I don’t think Ashwin the cricketer is done. I think only Ashwin the Indian cricketer called time. I am going to play for CSK, and don’t be surprised if I aspire to play for as long as I can.”

Ashwin also continues to play in the Tamil Nadu Premier League for the Dindigul Dragons, ensuring his presence in domestic cricket remains strong.

Embracing Relaxation and New Goals

As he transitions from the rigors of international cricket, Ashwin admits to wanting to explore a slower pace of life, albeit temporarily.

“I have not set any new goals. I just want to relax now. It’s difficult for me to stay inactive, but I want to try that for a while.”

This break, he hopes, will help him rejuvenate and focus on his next chapter in cricket, allowing him to continue contributing to the game in different formats.

A Legacy to Cherish

Ashwin’s retirement from international cricket marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian cricket. From his memorable spells in the longest format to his contributions in ICC tournaments, Ashwin leaves behind a legacy of excellence and innovation. As he continues to play for CSK and TNPL, fans can look forward to seeing his wizardry on the field for years to come.

As Ashwin himself says,

“I don’t think I’m done. The fire to compete is still burning bright.”
