The Boston Red Sox are taking steps to bolster their bullpen for the 2025 season. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the team has agreed to a one-year, $10.75 million contract with veteran closer Aroldis Chapman. Chris Cotillo of MassLive first reported that Boston had “progressed in talks” with Chapman before finalizing the deal.
Chapman’s 2024 Performance
Chapman, a 16-year MLB veteran, spent the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Across 68 appearances, he compiled a 5-5 record, notched 14 saves, and posted a 3.79 ERA. He struck out 98 batters over 61.2 innings, showcasing the high-velocity fastball and strikeout potential that have defined his career.
While his ERA and save totals were modest by his standards, Chapman’s ability to close out games and handle high-leverage situations makes him a valuable addition to the Red Sox bullpen.
A Proven Winner with Championship Pedigree
Chapman’s resume speaks for itself. The 36-year-old has played for several teams, including the Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
He has been part of two World Series-winning teams—the 2016 Chicago Cubs and the 2023 Texas Rangers. Known for his fiery fastball, which once regularly topped 100 mph, Chapman remains a feared presence on the mound.
Why the Red Sox Need Chapman
The Red Sox are retooling after missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year, finishing 2024 with a disappointing 81-81 record. With closer Kenley Jansen and veteran setup man Chris Martin both hitting free agency, Boston faced a critical need to reinforce its bullpen.
Chapman is expected to step into a prominent late-inning role, possibly as the team’s closer, depending on how the rest of the offseason unfolds.
The Bigger Picture for Boston
Signing Chapman is just one move in what is expected to be an aggressive offseason for the Red Sox. With glaring needs both on the mound and at the plate, Boston is reportedly pursuing other top-tier free agents in an effort to return to contention in the American League.
Adding Chapman signals the team’s intent to address its bullpen woes while targeting experienced players who can deliver under pressure.
Outlook for the 2025 Season
If Chapman can replicate or improve upon his 2024 performance, he could provide much-needed stability to a bullpen in flux. His wealth of postseason experience will also be invaluable for a Red Sox team looking to break its playoff drought.
For Boston, the Chapman signing is a step toward reclaiming its status as a perennial contender. However, much will depend on the team’s ability to secure additional reinforcements in the months ahead.
