As India continues to carve a niche in diverse sporting disciplines, the nation is taking calculated strides into the realm of winter sports. Ice hockey, often overshadowed by cricket and other mainstream sports, is now finding its footing in regions like Ladakh, which is emerging as the epicenter for winter games in the country.
In preparation for the 2025 Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League, India welcomed Darryl Easson, an internationally experienced ice hockey coach who has previously worked with teams in the UK and Hungary. Easson’s presence signals a pivotal moment for India’s winter sports aspirations. During an exclusive interview, he outlined the country’s potential in ice hockey and the roadmap ahead.
Why India is Poised for Ice Hockey Growth
Easson highlighted that India has been home to ice hockey for years, primarily in Ladakh, but emphasized the need to elevate its standards. He praised the enthusiasm of local players and their willingness to adapt, learn, and grow. “India can dream of glory if the right mentality, plans, and practices are put in place,” he said. With a supportive infrastructure and concerted efforts, Easson believes the sport could gain significant traction.
Infrastructure Challenges
The availability of ice rinks is a critical bottleneck for the sport’s growth in India. While countries without natural ice, such as Spain, have made remarkable progress through artificial rinks, India is yet to invest substantially in such facilities. Easson noted that ice hockey demands more logistical support compared to cricket, which requires only minimal setup. Despite this, he remains optimistic, especially with initiatives like ISKATE hosting training programs in Gurugram to empower local coaches.
Training Camp Insights
The Royal Enfield Ice Hockey Coaches Training Camp, held from December 8–12, is a stepping stone in creating a robust talent pipeline. Easson trained 32 coaches from regions such as Ladakh, Lahaul, and Spiti, who will further mentor over 500 players for the upcoming league. Such initiatives not only lay the groundwork for competitive sports but also inspire young athletes to pursue winter games seriously.
The Blueprint for the Future
December 2023 saw the release of The Gamechanger, a collaborative effort by Royal Enfield and various stakeholders that provides a strategic blueprint for ice hockey in India. The plan focuses on fostering local talent, improving facilities, and raising awareness about the sport. With continued support and the involvement of experienced professionals like Easson, the future of winter sports in India looks promising.
Conclusion
Easson’s engagement with India is not just about training players; it represents a shift in how the country views winter sports. From the icy terrains of Ladakh to modern training centers in cities, India is gradually building a winter sports ecosystem. With the right investments and sustained interest, the country could soon make its mark on the global ice hockey stage.
